Welcome to Rebel Nutrition
Hello! Welcome to the home of my food and nutrition related ramblings on the internet.
Welcome to the Rebel Nutrition Newsletter!
Hello! I’m Rosanna, I live in East Cork, Ireland with my other half and our two dogs Loki and Balto. If you are new here, I hope this will give you a little insight into Rebel Nutrition.
Food is a huge part of most of our lives whether we view it as something comforting, energising, something that fuels our performance, or soothes our emotions or a way to celebrate or commiserate. So there is no getting away from it and most of us spend a lot of time thinking about it!
Throughout my twenties and early thirties I was a regular Weight Watcher (shout out to my two WW buddies!) We would go every week, having not eaten all day and wearing the lightest clothes possible, step on the scale, go up or down a pound or two depending on how 'good' we'd been, listen to the tips on eating muller light yoghurts, how smoothies are the devil and how a Curly Wurly is better than a banana. Afterwards, we'd head off to the pub for a few drinks and a lash of chips to 'celebrate'.
If there was one good thing about Weight Watchers it was the 'we're in this together' buzz that you'd get from going with your friends but other than that I think it left me with a weird relationship with food and honestly it's taken quite a long time to sort it out!
Unfortunately, that's the case for most people these days, we're bombarded constantly with messages about good and bad foods, good and bad diets, the latest superfood or the latest carcinogenic food that's going to make us die early.
On the other hand, we as a society, judge people who are overweight, whether we mean to or not, it's just ingrained that weight = health. Like most things in life, it’s not quite that simple, weight is just one small factor among a whole host of things. Thankfully there are a lot of amazing people doing work and research in these areas so that we can understand that there is no perfect diet for everyone, that health is hugely multifaceted and that placing so much emphasis on weight, exercise and food is not helping us at all.
Like most people who end up studying/working in the nutrition area it was trying to understand my own relationship with food and exercise that led me to studying it. For the past 5 years I've done certificates in sport and exercise nutrition coaching, an evidence based nutrition course, courses in intuitive eating and binge eating/disordered eating and eventually went on to do an MSc in Clinical Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen. It's a fascinating area and we are learning so much every day about food, diet and the impact on health.
I’m now a Registered Associate Nutritionist and Rebel Nutrition is the business I have wanted to create for years. Somewhere people can come to get real, evidence based information on nutrition, diet, health and performance. Where we say no to yo-yo dieting and diet fads. Where amazing food is at the heart of it all and where you can learn to support your goals whatever they are.
Here we’ll learn to support ourselves with our food and diet while focusing on health overall. There are 8 core principles that will help to do that and everything we do reaches back to one of these.
You'll find more about them as the business grows but briefly, they are:
Ensuring that you have the right value based goals
Understanding your overall energy balance
Practicing gentle nutrition
Finding movement you enjoy
Honouring your hunger
Finding joy in food
Taking a non diet approach where appropriate
Doing all of this with a healthy dose of self compassion
